Golly Gee!
The website, Gulencharterschools, has compiled an interesting and current status list of both active and inactive “Gulen-inspired” charter school applications pending (or not) throughout the United States.
Currently, there are 149 operating schools. We decided to do a few mathematical calculations on exactly how much -- and where -- our tax dollars are going when it comes to the Gulen-inspired schools.
Our calculations are based on averages, and certainly can be higher in some instances.
There are approximately 45,000 students enrolled in the collective schools. If the school is paid an average of $10,500 per student (per school year), then we can assume that the boys are collecting around $472,500,000 – almost a half of billion bucks -- annually!
Now let’s go a step further and estimate that the average Gulen school employs around 7 Turkish employees (including teachers and administrators). It takes about $2500.00 to sponsor a H1-B visa holder to work in the United States. So assuming that there are about 945 Turkish/foreign-born H1-B visa holders at the 149 existing schools that would mean that the American tax payers shelled out about $2,362,500 in immigration fees, which is about 20% of the income produced by one year of student enrollment payments (paid with state and federal tax dollars).
Of course, these figures are calculated on a “one-time” basis analysis, but this has been going on for 11 years with no end in sight, and the influx and movement of the Turkish H1-B teachers/administrators has been constant for those 11 years.
We estimate that the $2,362,500 in immigration fees paid out to foreign teachers/administrators could have been used instead – to hire about 75 American teachers at an average entry level teaching salary of $30,000 per year. Keep in mind that the average H1-B visa salary for a foreign-born teacher is about $40,000 or higher. The H1-B sponsored Administrators have to be paid around $90,000 or higher, so our estimates are conservative at best.
And it is also a safe bet that the average salary for an American teacher or Administrator at one of the Gulen schools is at least 20% lower than their Turkish colleagues.
These figures do not include the little extras, like the Turkish board members passing resolutions for the tax payers to pay for their Turkish buddies graduate degrees. Who knows how much that has cost the American tax payers…
We are of the mind – and always have been – that the United States has some incredibly talented “native-born” teachers who not only want to teach if given the chance, but likewise are a pretty fed up with paying for foreign nationals to take their jobs.
So ask yourself – are you fed up enough – yet?
If so, take the initiative to contact your state and federal representatives and persuade them to take action (and that would not be the ones that have been accepting campaign money and free trips to Turkey). Hold them accountable – someone needs to.
It is after all an election year...

Proposed Gulen charter schools
last updated Apr 20, 2012
by C.A.S.I.L.I.P.S. - Citizens Against Special Interest Lobbying in Public Schools
Two lists are given here. One is for schools that are still being planned and may open in the future. The other is for schools that never materialized and which appear to be inactive. Note that the list of currently operating schools is given on our companion site.
"If 600 schools are bought this way in the United States – and that’s what the members of the Gulen movement are striving to do, - and if 200 students graduate from each one of these schools, then 120 thousand sympathizers of Turkey join the mainstream out there every year."
